The Fighting Griffins successfully returned from Iraq on 7 March Shortly thereafter on 15 June , the squadron stood down in order to later become the third operational MV squadron. As with all transitioning squadrons, standing up a VMM requires the squadron to become core-competent or qualified in the air, on the ground and in the maintenance hangar. Achieving this core competency is referred to as Milestone Immediately after reaching Milestone 33, the squadron began to plan and train towards becoming a composite squadron and assuming the Marine Expeditionary Unit MEU Mission.
