Ive got one in a Acer ultra portable and its more than enough perfromance for the majority of tasks but of course I would like the ability to add extra PCIe cards whilst drawing w or so. I hear good things. Patrick any idea about that combo? My thought is that there is little reason to save a few dollars and have to wait or worry about performance.
Adrian — the 32nm clarkdales basically do that already. Johnny — Wait about a week. It is a great combo. Patrick — True but the CULV is also combined with a mobile chipset so the total power use is very low, even compared to the excellent i3.
Looks like a board is about to be realesed:. That is not bad at all. I may try CULV desktop boards one of these days. I have a feeling that Sandy Bridge is going to change the low power landscape though. Do you happen to have the power consumption at full load, watching movie, or maybe with two hdd in file-server configuration on your D testbed. I try not testing at full load and with drives because SSDs have a tighter idle to max range for setting a baseline.
For load power consumption, I have never seen the D or N use more than 8w over idle. That is the great thing about Atom chips. With drives, they vary a LOT by generation which changes things like how many platters for a given capacity , rotational speed, and things like how fast heads are parked. Depending on the drive I have seen 3. My advice is to look up power consumption figures for each drive you would want to use and add to the numbers on this site.
I installed mine with call of duty, brothers in arms and gta but it disgusted me. The motherboard will refuse to POST with this card installed, no matter what settings you use in the bios. Install the OS, remove the dvd drive, and pop in an extra 2tb hard drive and it works great for this purpose.
As for overclocking, I added a small low RPM fan to the stock heatsink and it keeps it nice and cool, where it would be really hot running passively. I was able to overclock it to 1. Memory timings are an issue on this board. These mini-ITX and Atom reviews always bemuse me. These little systems were never intended to compete with general-purpose setups. The main reason many of us use them is because they are ideal for things such as remote climate and meteorological monitoring stations, which are solar powered.
Power consumption? The D and D? Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. Sign me up for the STH newsletter! This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. Intel D and NM10 platform consuming 25w at idle. Keep up the good work dude. OK, I feel better for getting that off my chest:. The Host adapters are functioning properly and I tested all the hard drives as well. The strange part is when the drives so to failed redundancy, they are all still online, but I have to click reactivate to make them resync.
For that, you might start with the Windows Server setup and deployment forum, here:. About the hardware RAID Due to the amount of hard drives, anything other that a RAID-5 is rediculously inefficient. I am not looking for blazing peformance, just lots of storage that won't be obliterated with a single HDD failure as happened recently with my desktop workstation.
As a matter of fact, I expect it to be quite slow; with an Atom D 1. The reason for choosing WHS and using this existing comuter I have is because of my financial constraints. On another note, my motherboard just completely crapped out me last night while attempting a reinstall of WHS bought a permanant GB HDD for it.
So it will be a week or two before I get a warranty replacement, but I am hoping that there was something wrong with the motherboard that may have been causing this issue. As for RAID in general, you do know it's a "high availability" solution, not a "data protection" solution, right?
For data protection, you want to back up your data and take the backup off site. I have to agree with you, on terms of mission-critical data, RAID is no substitute for a good backup. However, I'm not looking for a backup solution.
I don't expect the computer to burst into flames or get stolen or anything like that. It isn't going to be setup with data that is irreplaceable. The server is basically going to be the backup location for my main desktop, laptop, and serve as storage for my HTPCs.
I own all of the Blu-Rays and DVDs, and all the data for the PC backups will still be located on the origin PC if there's any problem, so all the data will either be replaceable or also located elsewhere, it would just be shame to lose everything from a single drive failing.
I was originally looking at getting Windows Server R2, but the cost of it was so high I couldn't justify. I'm hoping the problem will be resolved with a new MB and everything will work as I expect after that. OK, so I finally got my replacement motherboard. It turns out the old motherboard was not causing my issue. My RAID-5 still goes into failed redundancy after every startup. I won't name the manufacturers here but the ones I would have thought of as being good needed 3 replacement drives in as many years yet the other lesser make drives gave no issues at all.
What makes this odd is mirrored drives are accessed exactly the same as single drives so should have had no problems directly attributable to the configuration. I did have 2 separate 4 disk raid 5 hardware level raids in my WSS box one again on the motherboard and the other on a SiL controller and also made with desktop spec drives but these gave no problems.
Having archived many of the files and switched back to WHS the motherboard I have used is an H61 chipset which does not support raid on the integrated SATA controller so have implemented a Server R2 software raid.
This has been fine with music and picture libraries and is also a Time Machine destination for my iMac. Its performance is not great, noticeably slowing when uploading the file store en mass but now loaded works fairly well but only time will tell how reliable it will be.
